NIFS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) FUNDING
BACKGROUND
One of the key functions of the National Institute of Forensic Science (NIFS) as determined in the enabling Agreement is to:
Sponsor and Support Research in Forensic
Science
The program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of the forensic science community
and key stakeholders. Depending on the level of funding available, funding can be offered
in three different formats as follows:
competitive application; (not offered)
research fellowships; (not offered) and
SAG group proposals. (not offered)
Competitive Application
Applications are called for through open advertisement and completion of a
comprehensive application form. Applications are assessed by the Panel of Advisers who
make recommendations to the Board of Control. Successful applicants must accept the grant
conditions prior to funding being approved. A copy of the application package, including
notes to applicants, conditions of grant and an application form are attached.
Research Fellowships
The Research Fellowships were designed to allow scientists in forensic laboratories to
conduct relevant research projects in set blocks of time, rather than on a part-time
basis. There is a competitive application process with the maximum funding per project
being set at $25,000. Applications are assessed by the Panel of Advisers who make
recommendations to the Board of Control. A copy of the application package is attached.
Group Proposals
The group proposals are primarily aimed at the SMANZFL Specialist Advisory Groups
(SAGs). The SAGs represent the bench working forensic scientists
and as such, have a sound knowledge of research and development needs within their
respective disciplines.
These proposals are designed to ensure that proposals put forward have been discussed within the group in relation to objectives and expected outcomes and are therefore soundly based. The process should also identify the individual or team who are best placed to conduct the project.
It is most likely that the projects will be more development oriented than pure research. A copy of the proposal form is attached. Any proposals will be considered by the Panel of Advisers and those that are chosen will be further developed prior to Board approval and to funding being made available.
