About SMANZFL

The Senior Managers of Australian and New Zealand Forensic Laboratories (SMANZFL) are the group of the Directors of all Forensic Science organisations, scientific and police in Australia and New Zealand.

SMANZFL meets formally once a year, but out of session meetings are held throughout the year. The Role of SMANZFL is, "To promote Leadership in the forensic sciences in the pursuit of excellence".

The functions of SMANZFL are :

To provide leadership and best management practice in the forensic sciences
To promote interaction and co-operation with stakeholders
To promote Science Excellence
To contribute to police issues in the justice system
To promote confidence in the forensic science
To promote efficient and effective use of resources.

SMANZFL is supported by the Specialist Advisory Groups which advise SMANZFL and influence discussions on :

Technical Systems
Research and Development
Training
Quality
Legislative Policy/Framework
Communications/Representation

There are eight SAG’s :

Biology
Chemical Criminalistics
Document Examination
Field and Identification Sciences
Toxicology
Illicit Drugs
Electronic Evidence
Medical Sciences

The SAG’s are comprised of specialists from each of the organisations represented by SMANZFL. They met formally once a year, but out of session meetings are held throughout the year, and contact is maintained through email list groups.
